A Time to Be Thankful

With Thanksgiving right around the corner I can't help but reflect on all the reasons I have to be thankful, and with two healthy children, a close-knit family, and amazing friends, I have so many reasons. But this year, one thing keeps coming to the forefront of any thoughts of thankfulness and Thanksgiving--food.

Food is such a central part of our lives, not just because it provides us the nutrition we need to survive, but also because the conversations and interactions we have around food help nurture the relationships we need to thrive. With the holiday season starting up the image of coming together with family and friends over a table filled with our favorite foods, laughter, and love isn't hard to conjure.

Except if this isn't your reality. And for the over 300,000 Wisconsin children living in food insecure homes this may not be. Instead of looking forward to a plate filled with turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, biscuits, green beans, cranberry sauce, sweet potato souffle, and pumpkin pie, they may be wondering if there will even be enough food to sustain them and their family for the long weekend.

Many children in our community rely on the meals they receive at school to get them through the week. Weekends and long school breaks can be an especially challenging time for families who struggle with food insecurities. This is where the Cub Packs program comes in, providing children who need it with healthy meals and snacks to help get them through weekends and extended breaks. These small bags of food can make a big difference to a child who may otherwise go without adequate nutrition.

Currently 40 Hillsboro students, in Pre-K through 6th Grade are enrolled in the Cub Packs program. For $150 you can help support one of these kids, filling their bellies and focusing their minds, giving them a better chance to do well in school and have a prosperous life. If you can't give financially, then think about volunteering, or simply sharing information about this program and the Feeding Our Cubs organization.

This Thanksgiving I am thankful for you. For taking the time out of your busy day, during an often hectic time of the year, to read this and consider how you can help. For the support you can give, whatever that may be. For thinking about food in a new way this holiday season. For knowing you can make a difference in the life of child in your neighborhood. For helping to make my dreams of a world where no children face hunger one step closer to a reality.

Happy Thanksgiving
